Iowa's Little Hearts
I'm John, a severe Congenital Heart Defect (CHD) survivor! My mom, Gina, has developed a love and concern for heart babies, kids, and their families.
This blog is her labor of love for you...
whoever you are and wherever you may be.
Congenital Heart Defect
The term "congenital" means present at birth. A Congenital Heart Defect is a problem with the heart's structure and function that is present from birth.
There are many, many different kinds of CHD. Complex CHD (CCHD) is what John has. The national survival rate for CCHD to age 18 is 85%.
CHD is not rare. It is the MOST common birth defect, affecting 1 in 100 babies born in Iowa. This means that CHD changes the lives of Iowa families
every single day.
Promoting regionalism, transparency, and accountability within Iowa's "heart world".
